I expected more bureaucracy
I phoned the speed camera people today. In the second of two short conversations, I was informed that a police officer had reviewed the photo taken by the speed camera and had concluded that it was not a picture of my car. Presumably it's entirely the wrong model, or they took me at my word that my car has a tow hook and is a different colour to the colour of the photographed car as it was described to me. Anyway, a letter has been posted to me, which apparently apologises for the inconvenience and confirms that no further action will be taken against me.

This is all very much a relief for me. While I knew I had not been speeding down that road on that day, I expected a Brazil-esque journey through bureaucracy or the legal system in order to get the speed camera people/police to agree...

Good to hear it was simple to sort out. Did you make recommendations to them about potential changes they mght want to make to their forms though?

I pointed out my problem with the form and was told to write a letter explaining my situation and to staple that to the form before sending it off. Then after further discussion I was told to hold off doing anything until a police officer was consulted.

Presumably their attitude is that false positives like this don't come up often enough to allow for them on the form. I would be interested to learn what the percentage of false positives off speed cameras is.

Give me an hour or so and I'll update the wikipedia entry on speed cameras with a convincing sounding statistic. What shall we say, 0.26% inaccuracy?

You the man, Sordid, you the man.

Careful where you edit though, or my local wiki-watch committee might spring into action.

You make it sound like a bunch of geeks in spandex capes sitting around, waiting for the call that an article has been vandalised...

Glad you got it sorted. I haven't seen Brazil, it's been in my To See list for a while.

Glad to hear it. The comment I added to the other 'un stands, though. If you can get your employer to vouch that you were in work at the time, there isn't an awful lot they can say.
